Interesting. As a fellow mechanical engineer, Prof. Bejan is widely Jughead Jones In Case You Haven’t Noticed I’m Weird I’m A Weirdo I Don’t Fit In Shirt known is a prolific author and is highly cited in works in my field, from textbooks to research articles on thermodynamics and heat transfer. I had previously no idea he also delved into human studies. Awesome stuff! His theory about time moving perceptively quicker as one age make sense. That makes sense and I agree that the passage of time is perception. I was once told that when you were 6 years old, one year was 1/6 of your life which to a first grader, is a very long time.

I feel like As we grow older we remember less of the days gone by. I guess I always thought it was more simple than that. When you are 5 years old. A year is 1/5th of your life and is a greater chunk of what you remember. The more years go by. The less value you hold on a year bc it represents a smaller part of your life. It is just relative if a year is 10% of your life it lasts longer than when it is only 5% of your life. Just like the difference in perceived time depending on your state of mind.

The phenomenon of slowing time watching the clock can also play a role. When you’re young you cannot wait to be 18 for example, but when you are a little older you feel like time is going too fast and you want it to slow down. Hence, the focus on it going too slow, slow down perceived time and the focus on it going too fast, speeding up the perceived time. This is definitely something that can contribute but it can never be the sole cause. It is unlikely that watching a clock and being bored speeds up processing longer perceived time.
And having fun slows it down shorter perceived time. And the sentence: “It’s not that their experiences were much deeper or more meaningful, it’s just that they were being processed in rapid fire” is not completely true. They were more meaningful! The dopamine system is much more sensitive because all Jughead Jones In Case You Haven’t Noticed I’m Weird I’m A Weirdo I Don’t Fit In Shirt experiences are new (hence, childlike enthusiasm/curiosity). When you are older you have experienced more and events become more like a variation of the same, rather than something completely new.
